UTAZI LEAF
Utazi (Gangronema latifolium) is a climbing shrub with broad, heart-shaped leaves that has a characteristic sharp, bitter and slightly sweet taste, especially when eaten fresh. Its stems have soft/hairy and yield milky latex or exudates.
The fresh leaves are often used in various recipes like salads, soups and boiled with other food items. It is grown all over Africa and the African diaspora. Of particular importance is its use in western African states such as Nigeria where the leaf is used in soup to reduce blood pressure and relieve headaches.
